7 essential woodworking hand tools

7 essential woodworking hand tools

hello there welcome to program #8 of the tool chest show last time, we were making the trays before we go further with the trays we will install runners that the trays slide back and forth on

7 essential woodworking hand tools, and on show #9 we will resume with the dovetails and the trays, but before we do that we have a guest on the show today and that's joaneen, she will show us her workshop

and show us what she makes in her workshop come on in joaneen hello, hello how are you? welcome to the show, as if you've never been here tell me what you do in your workshop. i make different kinds of jewelry i make many things with metal copper wire, but i became interested in enameling and that is fusing powdered glass enamel

to the copper and you use high heat with a kiln or torch and i'm finding that to be a lot of fun. i have much to learn and i have more failures than success at this point but it's fun to learn it is very interesting because when i visit your workshop it's all torches and red hot metal and it is very exciting, a lot of color and things to see. very dramatic

it just looks dramatic. here are a couple of things i recently did, using two different colors this is fired a few times, first i put the white layer down and let that cool and then i apply a green layer of enamel and i scratch away so you can see the white underneath andyou can see if you had a really nice design you could make that into something very nice. so there is a lot you can do.

yes, these are just test pieces so is the orange and purple one it is a learning process that will take some time let's visit your workshop and see how you do this ok, let's go this is a nice room yes, it's the library i'll bet this the kitchen this is not the kitchen, our kitchen is upstairs

we use this room for our craft projects, painting and things like that. is that the phone? yes, why don't you come back in a minute? this must be the kitchen you're making me laugh. this is not our kitchen, our kitchen is upstairs this is perfect for your workshops because we can be painting and we have a sink to clean up it's not used as a kitchen.

we call this our downstairs kitchen and its soon to be our craft room and we're about to lose it here no, we're good, let's go this you might recognize, this the workbench that sven made in his workshop and it's the nicest gift anyone has ever given me and i'm using it but i'm taking good care of it it' a very nice workbench. so here is where i prepare the enamel

and cut out and form the metal. these are the enamels and there are hundreds of colors it is a very finely powdered glass. so you must handle it carefully and you don't want to breath it. you sift in onto the copper and melt it with a torch. here are two that i made the ones with shapes like this

you lay wires on it and they sink into the enamel and you can add color to the shapes that's called cloisonnã© and i'm still learning the technique it's fun to do. i tried to make a profile of sven but it came out as an african woman. so it is a lot of fun. would you like to fire some enamel? yes, i'd like to see it. ok let's get set up

this is when the workbench bursts into flames usually when i fire this jewelry i go outside, but it is really sunny so we'll work in here this is a fire brick and a tripod what i have here is an enameled copper disc with white enamel which will be a base for the next color if you use bare copper, the color will turn black

and that won't look good. so we start with white and add color to that. i use this small tripod and i will use the color orange you can use any color you want and here is a little sifter you want to cover it thoroughly. it looks like sugar and when it heats up it looks like melted sugar.

and when it gets smooth it is done. put a lot on especially close to the edges. and then we use the torch did you turn this off last time, no? you start far away so you don't blow the enamel off. when it begins to turn dark you can get closer and you will start to see more color

it is almost melting now it is melting it is almost ready. and it is done. you turn the gas off the color now is very dark but when it cools it will be lighter so i will move this because it is very hot and now you can have a try i'm nervous, i hope i do well

here is one for you. we will use the color blue thank you. so it comes out the bottom yes and you tap it with your finger make sure you get the edges more on the edges can you re-use the powder that falls off? yes, i put a cup under to collect it

that looks good. and now the torch yes and make sure you know how to use if safely. so start slowly? when it starts to melt you can get closer. and now it is beginning to melt you stop when it is completely melted it is melting quickly now ok, that is good.

is there a risk of heating it too much? if you over-fire it the color changes a bit so it is possible to create different shades of color if that is what you want. but we have done the basic color let's see if the first one has cooled. it is still rather hot i want to show you how the color brightened so you can see the color brightens as it cools

it is bright orange you can create designs, you can mix colors all sorts of things, so this is my new interest. well very good thanks for the tour of your workshop my dear. thank you for making my fabulous workbench. can we visit again sometime? sure you can. that was fun. we'll do that again.

now, where are we with the project that will not end? our tool chest. i made these runners for the tool trays to rest on this is one i made. it is simply a piece of wood and i glued on a smaller piece and that is what the tray slides on

i have already installed one inside. the upper tray fits here. and the lower tray is a bit shorter and fits here. and they can slide back and forth now we will install the lower one. i installed this with very small nails i could have glued it, but then i would not be able to remove it if later i change my mind.

i could have used screws but then i learned about how nails were often used and i thought it would be fun to use nails. this is what they look like. they are different from ordinary nails they have four sides. they are not round. here is a larger one of the same kind. it is tapered along its length and it has square sides.

these are called cut nails and this is how nails were made in the 1800's. thanks you so much for that. that was so necessary wasn't it? before the 1800's, nails were made by a blacksmith and he would hammer them one at a time then in the late 1700's cut nails were invented. a sheet of iron or steel was sheered

and cut into tapered nails. and during the 1800's that is what was done at the end of that century, steel mills began making rolls of steel wire and machines used the wire to make wire nails and these are the nails that we use today this is a wire nail and it works well for its purpose but the cut nails have one advantageover the wire nails because they have flat sides

and because they are tapered they have a grip in wood that is four times greater than the wire nail, so they're good forattaching clapboards, for example wood that expands and contracts contracts with the seasons pull the wire nails out. cut nails hold much better. so i thought it would be fun to use the old type nails to install these runners.

so now i will install this runner if i had been smart i would have donethis before i put the lid on and before i put the chain on but i'm not that smart so i will clamp this in place with the lid and the chain still on wish me luck i clamped it very well, i don't want it to move as i hammer the nails i want to be very precise.

i will also drill small holes to guide the nails yes, i know i'm using a power tool this is the only power tool i've used so far i have used the drill to drill holes so calm yourself. i know it's a power tool don't get your powdered wig and knee breaches all in a bunch over this okay, it's a power tool...let it go normally i would work on the floor but so you can see i will climb up here

i try not to bash the runner. not an easy trick. perfect. i'm happy. now i can proceed. was this a good idea? the votes aren't in but i think i know. this was a dumb idea. now we try the tray. let's see. oh boy!

it fits perfectly. there is no rocking and that's what i want not easy to do in front of a camera i promise you on the next show we will make the other tray. and then we will be finished i'm sure we are beyond our time at this point so, see you next time
